Scripture for the day: James 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”
Thought for the day: I vowed years ago never to make any more New Year’s resolutions; in fact, I believe that may have been the last New Year’s resolution I made, never to make any more. So far, it’s the only one I’ve managed to actually keep. But this year I’ve decided to come up with a few more that I think will be doable. Let me share some of them with you.
1. Gain weight. At least 30 pounds.
2. Stop exercising. Waste of time.
3. Read less. Makes you think.
4. Watch more TV. I've been missing some good stuff.
5. Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow.
6. Take a vacation to someplace important: like, to see the largest ball of twine.
7. Not jump off a cliff just because everyone else did.
8. Get in a whole NEW rut!
9. Start being superstitious.
10. Buy an '83 Eldorado and invest in a really loud stereo system. Get the windows tinted. Buy some fur for the dash.
11. Only wear jeans that are 2 sizes too big and use a chain or rope for a belt. Only wear white T-shirts with those fashionable yellow stains under the arms.
12. Spend my summer vacation in Cyberspace.
13. Create loose ends.
14. Get more toys.
15. Get further in debt.
16. Break at least one traffic law.
17. Not drive a motorized vehicle across thin ice.
18. Avoid airplanes that spontaneously drop 1000 feet.
19. Stay off the international space station.
20. Not swim with piranhas or sharks.
21. Spread out priorities beyond my ability to keep track of them.
22. Not try to escape from a maximum security prison.
23. Wait around for opportunity.
24. Focus on the faults of others.
25. Mope about my own faults.
Well, I think that should just about do it for the year 2023. If I can manage even the majority of these resolutions I should end this year on a lower note than ever before and have great improvements to look forward to in the year 2024. Seriously, none of us know where we’ll be at the end of this year, or even if we’ll still be taking in oxygen. So let’s make one serious resolution, shall we? Let’s resolve to be closer to God next December 31st than we are right now so that, no matter what may happen in the meantime, we’ll be doing just fine.
Now go take on your year. - Bill
